Articles - Creating a forest on your Railway

This article shows how to create forests and woods on your model railway. If you feel you can add to this article, contact me here.

Firstly, you must apply scatter to the area where you want your forest to be. If you need guidance on this, please see this article. Then once your area has been prepared, you must give the area a perimeter of cork bark. Make sure that the bark covers the outskirts of the area as the below picture shows. Once you have mapped out where the bark will go, sick it on the scatter using PVA Glue. Do not worry about the middle, that is where the trees will go.
Once the cork has dried, mix some mud coloured scatter together, and lightly sprinkle it on top of the cork. If you wish to sick this down as your layout will be moved, then create a 50/50 mixture of PVA glue and water, and use an eye dropper to apply it.
Then you are ready to put the trees in place. When you are doing this, try to place smaller trees on the outskirts of the area, and larger ones further in so that the wood looks more realistic. If you are using trees with bases, you might want to adjust the bases so that they fit into the bark. If they are just poles however than you can just drill through the bark so that they will slot straight in.
After you have "planted" the trees, you are ready to add the lichen. This should be laid underneath and in-between the trees so that it looks like ground cover and bushes. The below picture shows the effectiveness of lichen.
Below is the final result.
